Advantages of an Infrequent Blog Posting Schedule

Blog posting is critical to the development of any site and is a huge part of the blog building process. It is a common assumption that the more frequently you post new blog entries the more the traffic you will attract. Although this assumption is absolutely true what we are discussing here is how an infrequent posting schedule can actually bring out the blogging best in you. After all is it not the quality of your post that makes really makes the difference?

Here are 3 compelling reasons why infrequent posting schedules can actually work better for keeping readers happy and bringing out the blogging best in you!

Content Tends to Be of Higher Quality
Given a little more time before ‘rushing’ to publish your next post allows you to do a better job researching and collecting your thoughts. When readers do take their time to read your posts it is now time better spent due to the increased quality you have delivered!

Builds Greater Reader Anticipation
When your blog entries reflect more quality information reader tend to anticipate them more. Even if the frequency of your posting schedule is less than that of other sites many will feel that the quality you deliver is more than worth the wait.

Better Content Delivery
By allowing yourself time to research and compose instead of feeling rushed your delivery will be more clear and concise. Sometimes even the most mundane information can be more intriguing when worded in a way that everybody clearly understands.

The ‘breather’ you receive due to a more infrequent blog posting schedule also allow you to form and ‘deliver’ your own opinions or insights as well. More times than not your insights are more important to readers than the actual/factual information contained within! People want to know what others are thinking – it is human nature and helps us validate or disqualify our beliefs and/or opinions!

The frequency of your blog posting schedule can have a major effect on the amount of traffic you attract to your site. In fact your posting is an integral part of the overall blog building process however the question is at what frequency do you really need to post any new entries? The discussion above considers how a less frequent schedule of adding new blog entries can actually improve the overall performance of your site. The selection of what type schedule suits your time and talents will always be exclusively yours. It is just important to remember if you choose to post less frequently be sure you compensate your readers with great quality information!

Why Your Website Needs to be Mobile Friendly Right Now

There’s a fairly significant change coming next month to organic search and it has the potential to cause some major disruption in how your site performs in the search engines. Google announced at the end of February that it was increasing the use of “mobile-friendliness” as an organic ranking factor for a Web site. So, the main question you need to consider: is my site ready for this change?

Why Mobile Friendly Sites are Important to Google

It’s no secret that mobile devices are quickly overtaking desktop as the primary way we connect to the Internet on a regular basis. Smartphones now make up nearly 76% of all mobile devices according to the latest comScore data. And with all those devices come lots and lots of mobile searches.
Google reports that it handles about 3 billion searches each day. And while Google doesn’t tell us exactly how many of those searches are mobile (some estimate it is as much as 50% of all searches), we can be pretty confident that mobile search is a fairly significant share. Why? Consider the rise of the “virtual assistants” like Siri, Google Now and Cortana. Owners of smartphones are increasingly turning to these tools to conduct searches and those take place through mobile devices.
With that in mind, Google needs to display search results in a way that will provide the best experience for the user. And if the user is searching on a mobile device, they want to provide a result that will work well on that user’s device. Google, for some time now, has used “mobile friendliness” as a ranking factor in organic search. But with the growth in the use of mobile, Google needs to give more weight to sites that have been optimized for mobile. And that’s what’s driving the change next month.

Will Google’s “Mobile Friendly” Change Impact Your Site?

While no one can say for certain whether or not your site will be impacted by this change, there are a few things you can check to see if you are ready for the transition:

Will Google’s “Mobile Friendly” Change Impact Your Site?
While no one can say for certain whether or not your site will be impacted by this change, there are a few things you can check to see if you are ready for the transition:
  1. Test your site using Google’s Mobile Friendliness Tool. Google has created a tool to test your site for mobile friendliness. The test is simple and straightforward: enter your site’s URL in the search box, Google conducts a quick analysis, and lets you know whether your site is mobile friendly or not. If it is not mobile friendly, Google provides a link to a technical guide you can follow to improve your site. If you’re not comfortable with Web design/development, you’ll need to reach out to a Web developer to help you get the site ready.
  2. Ask: Is mobile search important for your business? Depending on the type of business, mobile search may be very important to your visibility in the search engines. Retail shops, restaurants, venues and pretty much any place with a location where customers come to you will need to provide a great mobile experience. Engaged in eCommerce? Mobile commerce (called mCommerce) is on the rise, so providing shoppers with a good mobile experience is more important than ever. Bottom line: if being found on mobile devices is important, you need to make sure that your site is mobile-friendly.
  3. Find out: Do you get a significant number of visitors through mobile search today? Take a look at your Google Analytics data. What percentage of your organic traffic comes in on mobile devices? How is that data trending? If your mobile audience growing? If so, you need to create a great user experience for them while also getting your site ready for a greater emphasis on being mobile friendly.

What You Need to Do if You Believe Your Site Will Be Impacted

  1. Be prepared to act quickly. The April 21 deadline is approaching quickly, so you do not have a lot of time. Every day you delay taking action puts you at risk for the potential to fall in organic rankings.
  2. Explore a temporary solution. Depending upon the type of content management system you are using, you may be able to put in place a mobile switcher or mobile-friendly theme. If this is an option for your site, it is one you may want to put in place while working on a better, long-term solution.
  3. Redesign your site to use a responsive design. The best, long-term solution is to redesign your site with a mobile-first philosophy. This approach allows you to create a site design that is responsive to the device your visitors are using (mobile, tablet or desktop) to give them a better experience, while also helping you maintain (or even improve) your organic mobile search rankings.

Disagreements can be productive

In the world of business, disagreements with peers and team members about the best course of action are inevitable. These disagreements can be productive, or they can turn negative and become relationship- and results-killers.
Here’s how to make sure your disagreements are productive:
  • Make the necessary deposits. If you want to have productive arguments with your peers, your team and maybe even your clients, you need to have already made “deposits” toward those relationships. Unless and until your intentions are known, disagreements may feel personal and political. But if your intentions are known and your relationship is strong at the start, then arguments and disagreements can actually help you produce better results.
  • Don’t make personal attacks. It bears repeating: If you want to have productive disagreements, you cannot turn them into personal attacks. Your argument needs to center on the best choice to produce the outcome over which you are arguing. Avoid making personal attacks against the other person. If she has made mistakes in the past, leave those mistakes in the past. Confine your disagreement to the matter at hand.
  • Accept that others’ intentions are good. You cannot have a productive disagreement while also questioning the other person’s intentions. If his intentions are bad — if what he is arguing for is immoral or illegal, for example — you cannot have a productive disagreement. But if you’re arguing over the best course of action, then assume the other person wants the same outcome you do.
  • Have a clean heart yourself. If you want other people to treat you as if your intentions are good, you too must have a clean heart. You cannot have a productive disagreement if what is really driving your argument is what you stand to gain. Assume others have good intentions, but also make sure your intentions are above reproach.
  • Find a path you can agree on. And here’s the thing about productive disagreements: You don’t win by winning the argument. You win by discovering the best path forward and gaining agreement to pursue it. I’ve had relationships with partners who were willing to concede to the person with the strongest feelings. They valued the relationship as much as the outcome — and that is at the heart of a productive disagreement.
Remember, your goal in a productive disagreement isn’t to beat the other person but to choose the best path forward together.

9 Dos and 10 Don’t of Web Design

I’m continually surprised by how many people start meetings with our design company with very firm ideas about what they want on their website and yet,  haven’t thought through some of the most basic questions first. For this reason, our first question is always “Why do you need a site?,” not “What do you want on it?” Your website is a marketing tool. For many businesses, it’s their only source of business. If done right, it can be a major part of yours.
Here’s a quick-hit list of the top dos and don’ts before you get started:
     Do:
    1. Set smart goals. And make sure they’re measurable. Here are a few great ones a Web designer wants to hear: increase conversion rates, increase sales, generate more leads, reduce overhead, and improve brand awareness.
    2. Plan on becoming an SEO wizard. Sure, you’re going to want help from the pros and eventually you might even need your own in-house SEO expert, but search engine optimization is something you need to know about too. It has one of the highest ROIs in marketing.  SEO can literally put your marketing on autopilot, allowing you to focus on improving the quality of your business, instead of figuring out how to bring in customers to your site.
    3. Use CMS. A CMS makes it easier for people to create, edit and publish content on a website. Website publishing has required significant technical skills (HTML, programming). A good CMS allows non-technical authors and editors to easily and quickly publish their content with relative ease.
    4. Think about your mobile strategy simultaneously. Research the percentage of your visitors that are likely to use mobile devices to access your site. If it’s high, you may want to consider building a separate mobile version of your site, or even an app. If it’s relatively low, just make sure your website works on smart phone.
    5. Steal from your competitors. Before you build your site, check out your competitors and write down the things they do well. If you like the look and feel of another site, there’s no reason not to start with something you like and then make it your own.
    6. Develop your content. The biggest slow-down in the Web design process is content. If you’re going to sell products on your site, get product photos and product descriptions ready. If you sell services, you’ll need a description of each service. Get as much of your content together before you start building your site—it will save you weeks. And while you’re at it…
    7. Write with calls to action in mind. Good calls to action allow visitors to quickly decide what they want to do next. Having a big sale? Don’t just write a banner that says “50% off all products.” Write one that says “50% off all products, CLICK HERE to view them.”
    8. Always answer the question “why?” Have you ever walked up to someone you’ve never met, handed them a business card, and walked away without saying a word? Likely not. If you want people to do something on your website, such as sign up for your newsletter, don’t just put up a box that says “enter email” or even “sign up for newsletter”—you’ll get a very weak conversion rate. Tell them why they should do it: “Sign up for our newsletter to receive weekly specials.” Same thing goes for Twitter and Facebook logos. Just putting them up isn’t smart. Tell people why they should follow you on Twitter or friend you on Facebook. What will they get out of it?
    9. Trust your Web designer. I tend to see the worst end results with customers who come in with a “I know what I want, just do what I tell you” attitude. You hired an expert because they know more than you, right? Let them do what they do best and they’re more likely to meet and often exceed your goals.
    10. Don’t:
      1. I know—I run a Web design firm, so of course this was going to be stated. But seriously, your website is often where your customers’ first experience your brand. If it looks homemade, they’re going to make assumptions about your business that you probably want to avoid.
      2. Make people think. When visitors come to your website, they typically already know what they want out of it. Do a three-second test: If within three seconds a visitor can’t figure out what to do next, go back to the drawing board.
      3. Expect visitors. Lose the “if you build it, they will come” mentality. Simply putting up your site will not result in any visitors.
      4. Spend all your money. Don’t max out your entire budget on the website. You can get a well-designed site for under $2,000 from a freelancer, or a few thousand dollars from a professional agency. And you can always make improvements as your business grows. It’s far more important initially to have some money left over for a marketing budget so you can actually make a return on your investment.
      5. Add a blog. Are you really going to write posts? Be honest. If you won’t, then forget about a blog. A website with an outdated blog can create the perception that your company is small or even out of business.
      6. Add Twitter and Facebook buttons. If a potential client clicks through to your social pages and sees hardly any followers, they may lose trust in you. First build up your social presence, then commit to posting and engaging your fans on a regular basis, and only then promote them on your website. Also keep in mind that some businesses simply don’t belong on Twitter or Facebook.
      7. Try to please everyone. Your website will be a mess if you try to accommodate every type of visitor who might come along. Figure out who is likely to be your most frequent users and focus on creating the best experience for them.
      8. Add testimonials. Building credibility is important, but too often testimonials sound fake. “’They are great!’ says John Smith” simply isn’t believable. If you’re going to have testimonials make sure they are specific, and something people can relate to.
      9. Use Flash. Some sites still need it, but if you can, avoid it. Adobe just announced that it will no longer support Flash on mobile devices and set-top-boxes. The last thing you want is for a potential customer to be unable to open your site.
      10. Expect a killer website overnight. Good websites take time to build. If you want the best results out of your site, be prepared for several months of work.

5 Surprising Things the Top Ranked Sites on Google Have in Common (And What You Can Learn from Them)

How much can a search engine change in a year? If it’s Google, the answer is a lot. Best SEO practices suddenly can turn into web page death sentences if you’re not careful. But even if you don’t have time to keep your finger on the pulse of the ever-changing search industry, you’re in luck. A new infographic and report from Searchmetrics has done a lot of the work for you. It analyzes and distills the information you need to know.

    1. Big Brands Don’t Have to Work as Hard as You Do

Let’s face it. When you have a memorable, mesmerizing campaign that people can’t stop talking about, you don’t have to do a lot to encourage them to spread the word. Simply because Coca-Cola is a huge brand and a household name, it can get by with making a sub-par, non-optimized site.
They, and many other brands like them, can ride the waves of backlinks, mentions, and other social signals, and their content always rises to the top. Of course, this doesn’t mean that they should rest on the laurels of their success. The bigger the brand, the bigger the social media reach, and the bigger the fall when things like this happen:
Either way, people are talking, and Google is paying attention. So, does this mean that if you’re a small player, you really don’t have a chance against the big boys with bottomless pockets?
    Not necessarily…

    2. Social Signals Matter – But Which Ones Matter Most?

It’s no secret that Google is watching social signals carefully. Facebook likes, shares, Twitter tweets, and even Pinterest pins are showing up on its radar. But, another finding from the not-so-surprising department shows that Google +1’s are given the most ranking recognition, followed closely by Facebook.
If you don’t yet have a Google+ account (or don’t use it often), it may be time to take the plunge: links shared on Google+ pass PageRank.

    3. Backlinks and Headings – Are They Still Important?

You’ve likely heard that keyword-rich backlinks and heading 1s with your keywords can help your search engine ranking. But this changed in 2012 to the point where keyword-added H1’s can hurt, rather than help, your ranking. Long page titles also can affect your site negatively.

    4. Should You Register a Domain Name with Keywords In It?

The perpetual question that’s always on every marketer’s mind when they launch a new venture – should my domain name include keywords? Currently, Google is paying less attention to this metric than the placement of the keyword in other places, such as in the title, URL, and in both internal and external links. A well-balanced internal linking structure is vital for spreading around all the valuable optimized “link juice.”

    5. Is Quality Content Enough?

Well-written content is still important in Google’s eyes, as are a decent number of images and strong internal links. Page load speed also is a factor, as is the word count, when it comes to backlinks. If you’re consistently publishing good content, steadily acquiring backlinks, and adding rich media including images and video, you’re taking all the right steps to maintain a solid ranking.
So far, the shift seems to be toward less emphasis on “keyword tricks” (such as registering domain names with the chosen keyword in them or peppering the keyword in H1 tags) and more emphasis on quality (with the backlinks and social shares to back it up).

How to Improve Your Website's Google Ranking

Google's search engine uses a variety of methods to determine which pages are displayed first in the results. Their exact formula is a secret, but there are always a few things you can do to improve your positioning. The term for this is Search Engine Optimization(SEO).
These tips may not make your website the first one to appear in the list, but they just may help you move up a little. No matter what you do, make sure you make a site that you want to visit and written the way humans would want to read it. If you're gaming the system, sooner or later Google will figure it out and change their formula. You'll end up plummeting in the search results and wonder why.
Ignore spam and websites that offer to submit your website to hundreds of search engines. At best these are wastes of time or money and at worst they can actuallyhurt your ranking.

    Keyword Phrases

A keyword phrase is, generally speaking, the words you think someone is most likely to put into a search engine to find your content. They should appear in your content. Don't overdo it. If it looks spammy, it probably is. Again, the point here is to speak like a human and just use the words that humans are most likely to use when searching for a page about your topic. If you use obscure words, define them. Otherwise, just use natural language.
If you were searching for your own website, what keyword phrase would you type into Google for each page? Would you look for super fast widgets? Would you look for cooking with widgets? It may be helpful to get a different perspective. Ask someone else to read your page and suggest what they think your keyword phrase might be. You can also check Google Trends to see if one phrase is starting to gain popularity.
Try to stick to one subject per page, and stick to one keyword phrase per page. That doesn't mean you should write stilted text or use odd phrases. Clear writing is both easier to search and easier to read. Don't be afraid to be really long and detailed with that subject. Think Wikipedia.

    Density

One of the things Google looks for when it catalogs pages is the density of the keyword usage. In other words, how often the keyword occurs. Use natural phrasing. Don't try to trick the search engine by repeating the same word over and over or making text "invisible." It doesn't work. In fact, some of that behavior even get your website banned.
Give a strong opening paragraph that says what your page is actually about. This is just good practice, but it may help search engines find your page, too.

    Name Your Pages

Give your pages a descriptive name with the <title> attribute. This is vital. Google often displays search results as a link using the Web page's title. A link called 'untitled' isn't enticing, and nobody is going to click on it. When appropriate, use the page's keyword phrase in the title.

    Links

One of the biggest factors Google looks at is the hyperlink. Google looks at both links to and from your website.
Google looks at the words you use in links to help determine the content of your page. Use links within web pages as a way to emphasize keywords. Rather than saying, "click here to learn more about SEO" you should say: Read more about SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
Links from other websites to your website are used to determine PageRank.
You can improve your PageRank by exchanging text links with other relevant websites. Banner exchanges are not effective, and pages that want to charge you for this service are often known spammers that can hurt your rank.
Links are another area where you shouldn't overdo it. A page that is nothing but a list of links is spam.

    Social Networking

Social networking sites can be a good way to promote a site, but it is unclear how much it will affect your rank directly. Google+ promotion may have the most impact. That said, you may find that a great deal of your traffic comes from social networks, so be sure to make your content social friendly. Add images and give your content interesting titles.

    Make Your Graphics Search Friendly

Give your images <alt> attributes. Not only does it make your website more accessible to the visually impaired, it also gives you another chance to place your keywords where Google can see them. Just don't stuff keywords that don't belong.

    Good Design Is Popular Design

In the end, strong, well organized pages are pages that Google tends to rank higher. They're also pages that tend to become more popular, which means Google will rank them even higher. Keep good design in mind as you go, and much of the SEO will design itself.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD EMAIL MARKETING CAMPAIGN?

Email marketing is still one of the cheapest and fastest forms of advertising available for businesses, so it’s no wonder more businesses are looking to this rapid and effective form of communication.
However, there are some important key factors when creating an email marketing campaign that you need to think about.
    1. You need a clear and simple message
    2. Understand your target market
    3. A clean and creative design
    4. You need a call to action
    5. There needs to be purpose to the email
    6. You need to measure it success
    7. Make sure your logo is visible
    8. Personalise the email
    9. Catchy headlines
    10. Keep away from purchasing email lists.
    11. Analyse each campaign and the effectiveness of the message
    12. And last but not least it needs to be useful

YOU NEED A CLEAR AND SIMPLE MESSAGE

Don’t clutter the email with multiple messages that will only confuse the recipient. Keep it brief and to the point with a strong call to action.

    UNDERSTAND YOUR TARGET MARKET

Understand your target audience and give them something of interest to them. The message should offer something that will interest them and take action.

    A CLEAN AND CREATIVE DESIGN

Set yourself apart from the rest and design a creative pleasurable experience for the recipient. The chances are your customers are receiving many emails trying to encourage them to use different services or buy products, maybe your competition. Do it better.

YOU NEED A CALL TO ACTION

Give them a reason to interact and now. Make them want/need to click to find out more about your offer and give a time frame for the offer.

THERE NEEDS TO BE A PURPOSE TO THE EMAIL

Don’t send an email for sending sake. There needs to be a reason and a purpose for the message. If you bore them or they receive to many message you will end up with a lot unsubscribing.

YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO MEASURE IT SUCCESS

You need to know how many emails were received, opened, bounced, clicked so you can track your email campaigns to analyse what has worked and what hasn’t.

MAKE SURE YOUR LOGO IS VISIBLE

Your logo is important especially if it is a trusted brand. This helps your recipient know who is sending the email and whether it is real or not, have they subscribed to you.

    PERSONALISE THE EMAIL

By personalising your emails (Hi Jon) you’re being polite and inclusive of the recipient, as if you know them. This also is very important for anti-spamming reasons as well.

    CATCHY HEADLINES

This could be the difference between a successful campaign and a flop, why risk it, be creative and in tune with your demographic. Give them something that will make them react.

KEEP AWAY FROM PURCHASING EMAIL LISTS

This is a no brainer, why would you pay for a list when you don’t know whether they are legit, are they still working or if they are your target market, not to mention the possible legal aspects.

ANALYSE EACH CAMPAIGN AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE MESSAGE

Did your campaign/message work, was the response good or bad, how could your message be improved, did it improve your bottom line and finally did it boost your customer base.
