Optimizing For Good Results In Natural Search

What is natural search and how do you optimize a website for good results? Natural search refers to a web visitor using a search engine to conduct a search. Sometimes, this is also known as organic search. The terms natural search and organic search are often used interchangeably, for they refer to the same thing.

Before learning how to obtain good results for natural search, let’s first try to understand why such traffic is valuable.

All Internet websites, assuming they are there for commercial reasons, want to make more sales. In order to make more sales, they must drive targeted traffic to their websites. Targeted traffic means that the visitors are pre-qualified in some way. Natural search traffic is considered to be targeted traffic because something can be said about the intention of the visitor.

For instance, if someone is searching for “Canon Digital Camera”, we know that this person may be thinking about purchasing a digital camera (preferably a Canon camera). So if the website has this product for sale, the visitor can be converted into a paying customer. That is why many businesses that used to operate offline are trying to rank well in the search engines. Those who manage to obtain high rankings get to enjoy a free and steady stream of highly targeted traffic. Of course, more traffic eventually leads to more profits.

So how do you optimize a website for better natural search results? There are two components you need to work on.

First component: On-site optimization.
On-site optimization means that your website must be search engine friendly. Different search engines have their own set of webmaster rules. However, the fundamentals are similar. For example, all search bots like your site to have a clear structure. Navigation should be easy, and links should be easily identifiable. Whenever possible, try to include a site map. A site map helps the search bots to find all the web pages within the website. In addition, always add target keyword phrases in the page titles. If possible, use search engine friendly URLs (e.g. static html files with keyword rich file names). Avoid posting duplicate content (web pages that appear similar) on the website.

Second component: Off-site optimization.
Search engines determine the importance of a website based on incoming links. But not all incoming links bring the same value. Avoid posting links on link farms. Your back links should be coming from relevant websites that are similar to the theme of your own website. For instance, if you are promoting a credit card website, your incoming links should ideally be coming from other credit card related sites. The problem is, how do you get external sites to link back to you? There are several methods you can adopt.

Article marketing – post relevant articles to article directories. You may then include two or three links in the author resource box.

Guest blog posting – post a guest blog entry in a relevant blog. Of course, your blog post should be unique and contain valuable information.

Press releases – issue press releases about your website. For paid releases, you are usually allowed to add your own links.

Blog commenting – join in the discussion and leave comments on other people’s blogs. Remember, your intention is not to spam but to participate. That will increase your approval rates.

Social bookmarking – have something valuable to share? Bookmark your own blog entries and share them with others. These bookmarks count as incoming links as well.

Google Webmaster Guidelines Updated To Warn About Blocking CSS & JavaScript Files

Blocking GoogleBot from JavaScript or CSS can harm your visibility in Google's search results.

Google announced they’ve updated their webmaster guidelines to specifically note that blocking your CSS or JavaScript files may have a negative impact on your indexing and search rankings in Google.
Pierre Far, Google’s Webmaster Trends Analyst, said the “new guideline specifies that you should allow Googlebot access to the JavaScript, CSS, and image files that your pages use” all for “optimal rendering and indexing.” If not and you block Googlebot access to these files, Pierre added it “directly harms how well our [Google] algorithms render and index your content and can result in suboptimal rankings.”
How can you be certain GoogleBot can render your web pages properly? Google created the fetch and render tool within Google Webmaster Tools four months back specifically for this reason. Google back then said you should make sure not to block these files because GoogleBot is trying to render your full HTML.
What changed in the guidelines exactly?
Before:
Use a text browser such as Lynx to examine your site, because most search engine spiders see your site much as Lynx would. If fancy features such as JavaScript, cookies, session IDs, frames, DHTML, or Flash keep you from seeing all of your site in a text browser, then search engine spiders may have trouble crawling your site.
After:
To help Google fully understand your site’s contents, allow all of your site’s assets, such as CSS and JavaScript files, to be crawled. The Google indexing system renders webpages using the HTML of a page as well as its assets such as images, CSS, and Javascript files. To see the page assets that Googlebot cannot crawl and to debug directives in your robots.txt file, use the Fetch as Google and the robots.txt Tester tools in Webmaster Tools.
For more details on this update, see the Google blog.

The psychology of Web design: How colors, typefaces and spacing affect your mood

A great website design is so much more than just delivering content and making it look good. When visitors come to your site, they produce a set of feelings about your website and your organization. The type of feelings they produce – positive or negative – are entirely in your hands and should not be overlooked when designing content.
Over the years, there has been a body of knowledge produced to help designers create effective visuals that play into the psychology of their viewers. In order to achieve this, one must understand how different design elements and how we use them affect the mood, attitude and experience the visitor will have while browsing our website.
Below are four major areas of website design and development that have the biggest impacts on the psychology of website visitors. These are the tools you’ll need to create a visually-engaging site that encourages visitors to return.

    Content

For websites, content drives the design you see on screen. Visitors come to a website to access information they need. Design helps them find the information they need quickly and with ease.
In the early days of the Web, it was common to see pages and pages slammed with content, often pages with 10,000 words or more (as a comparison, this article is about 1,600 words). With pages loaded down with content, it made it extremely difficult to find content, let alone read through to get the information needed. This often invoked stress, anxiety and overall unpleasant feelings for visitors.
With today’s Web, content should be edited and organized so that there is a happy medium between providing adequate and needed information while not overwhelming visitors. When content is in that happy place, visitors are able to find the information quickly and they feel good afterwards.
Hiding content, presenting too much content or otherwise mudding up your website makes visitors irritable, leading to possible loss in potential business.
In addition, the type of content you present sets a tone for you and your organization. If your content doesn’t present the right information in a logical place, is hard to follow or tends to beat around the bush on important information, then visitors will feel this way about you.
Keep your content clean, organized, easy to read, concise, and professional to help aid in the psychology of your visitors and produce positive vibes.

    Space

The way a Web page is organized can dramatically affect how a visitor feels while they are there. Organizing content should be a priority in any website design, but this organization should take into consideration the space it takes up on the site.
If you’re not familiar, “white space” is the areas of a design in which no content or visual element demanding our attention is present. White space plays an important role in any type of design work, especially Web design, because it visually gives a resting place for the visitor. These resting places are often found in margins and the space around things.
The concept of minimalism – that is, using the least amount of visual content needed to convey your point or idea – is currently very popular across the Web
if a visitor comes to your website and every inch of real estate on the screen is taken up by words, graphics, blinking things, etc., it starts to feel chaotic and makes them uneasy. If no white space is present, there is nothing for them to move their eyes to take a visual break.
If you take the time to edit and organize your content in a way that is respectful of the space you have to present the information, you give a feeling of professionalism, organization and overall good vibes to visitors. You want your visitors to feel like you have your stuff together and that you are easy to work with.
Keeping things simple with a well organized website using adequate white space tells visitors you know what’s important and you don’t want to waste their time.

    Color

When designing a website, often the colors are dictated by the organization’s new or existing visual identity (or brand). But how these colors are used affects how the visitor feels when they visit your site.
Most visual identities have neutral colors (i.e the tints, shades, and hues of whites, grays, and blacks) that are used along with their main colors. In most modern designs, these neutral colors often take dominance in terms of how much real estate they take up.
For instance, if an organization’s main colors are blue and yellow, with neutrals being white and black, it is likely that they may choose a white background to display their content on, instead of a blue or yellow background.
These neutrals act much like white space does: it provides an opportunity for rest. Using the example above, if all you see on that organization’s website was blue and yellow, it would be an overwhelming site to focus your attention on (think yellow text on a blue background).
The types of colors you use also play into the psychology of your Web design. Cooler colors (blues, greens, purples) often provide an inviting, professional and relaxed feeling. In contrast, it can be used to give a very cold and unfriendly feeling as well. Warmer colors (yellows, oranges, reds) are soothing, warm, and give a sense of creativity but can also give off negative feelings such as anger and stress.
In addition, neutrals such as white often give a positive feeling of openness, but could also feel bland and dull. Grays are often considered slick, modern, and clean, but can be very cold and uninviting. Blacks are often associated with being professional and clean cut, but is also very overpowering and can be rather generic.
How you use colors to help convey the positive feelings discussed above depends on the tint (lightness), hue (type) and shade (darkness) of the color as well as how much of the color you opt to use. If you want your site to be inviting, open and creative, a combination of blues and greens, with touches of yellow or orange, on a white or light gray background will help convey these positive feelings to your visitors.

    Typography

Finally, typography can convey tons of emotions and feelings for visitors to your website. There are thousands of typefaces out there, and thanks to advancing Web technology such as CSS3, these typefaces have found their way onto websites as well.
No more picking a typeface out of the 15 or so Web-safe fonts. This has opened the door to thousands of new typefaces that can be used. And with great choice comes great responsibility.
Typefaces are designed to be used in specific situations and for certain uses. Serif fonts (those with little serifs, or feet, on the letters like Times New Roman) are often associated with professionalism, scholarly, and seriousness, while san-serif fonts (like Helvetica) are a bit more modern feeling, clean and more informal.
For example, most news websites (i.e. The New York Times) use serif fonts to help convey the feeling of tradition, importance and knowledge. They want you to feel like they are an authority, that what you are reading is important and that they know what they are talking about.
Sans-serif fonts are used more and more to convey a feeling of modern, clean, sophistication and upscale. Those in the technology industry often use san-serif fonts much more than serif fonts because they want visitors to feel like they are up-to-date and futuristic.
The way type is presented on the page is also important. Leading (space between the lines) and kerning (space between the letters) should be evaluated as well. Large leading with lots of white space between lines makes the copy feel airier and easier to read; little leading gives a crowded feeling and is hard to read more than one paragraph at a time.
Space between paragraphs, margins between blocks of text and other elements on the page, and font size (and its relation to leading) are also factors to consider. Tight paragraphs are uninviting and hard to read, copy that is too close to elements such as pictures make the page feel crowded, and too large or too small font size will either make the visitor feel like you are screaming at them or whispering.

    Conclusion

It is often the designers’ job to understand the psychology of their design choices when producing a design, but understand the basics in some key areas of design will help you understand and even further help produce great content and manage your website design more effectively.
While these areas focus mainly on website design, a lot of the psychology of design can be used in other areas of design as well, such as logo and print design.

15 SUGGESTIONS TO MARKET YOUR WEBSITE PROPERLY

With the New Year round the corner, comes a new start, new challenges, and new opportunities. This is specially the case in the world of business, where 2015 is expected to offer us a number of new and exciting ways to market our businesses. – Specifically to market your website.

A good online website presence had become a staple for any up and coming business in 2014, and yet as we go into the New Year, many business owners remain blissfully unaware of how important and how beneficial it can be to market their website. Others will have only recently created their website, again with no real efforts towards marketing.
Here at 3KITS Web we’ve compiled a list of the 15 most effective techniques for marketing your new website, all of which are guaranteed to drive successful sales, build your online presence, or improve your brand identity recognition.
    Keep your branding consistent
Your brand identity is what improves recognition of your company, while setting you and your website apart from your competitors in the minds of your target audience. From a choice of colour scheme to tone of voice, all of your company’s output should resonate with your brand image. Your website is no exception, and neither are the articles or videos which you post on it, or the social media updates which link back to it.
    Use search engine optimisation (SEO)
Search engine optimisation involves making overt and covert changes to your website to improve your page rankings. Regular practice includes using relevant key words, inserting internal links, creating a site map, and regularly uploading unique content. The second part of SEO is offsite work. Basically getting links to your site which are relevant. You can also use analytics to review your performance, and ensure your website remains fully optimised at all times.
Create a calendar to improve and monitor your SEO
With so much competition in the market, and so many businesses developing websites and creating content, it can be quick and easy to undo the good work which you put into your website marketing, especially from an SEO perspective. Create a schedule for uploading content, assessing your website analytics, sharing content on social networking websites, and any other tasks. In order to achieve the best ROI you’ll need to remain consistent with your efforts.
    Start blogging
At 3KITS Web we practice what we preach, which is why you’re reading this article on our blog. A regularly updated blog can convey your professionalism and trustworthiness to customers, while interesting and informative copy will give them a reason to head back to your website. A blog can also do wonders for your search engine optimisation plans, as you’re given the opportunity to include relevant keywords, while increasing the likelihood of back-links and sharing on other websites.
    Use video marketing
Videos are becoming an increasingly popular method for the marketing of websites, products and services. Use YouTube or share on your own website, and give your customers something more exciting and engaging than a block of text. Videos are also preferable to users browsing on smartphones with smaller screen resolutions, where reading large paragraphs can be particularly time-consuming. Also, YouTube videos do get listed on the main Google results page so in theory youyou could get listed twice on the same google page result.
    Make sure you’re mobile-friendly
Statistics from September 2014 showed that nearly 15% of the India’s internet users connect through a smartphone or tablet, so it’s essential that your website displays and functions properly on all devices, like the Apple iPhone or Google Nexus. Ever-growing numbers of us are using our phones or tablets for work and social browsing, so a mobile-optimised website ensures you aren’t alienating a portion of your potential audience. Also, Google gives priority rankings to mobile specific websites on its mobile search feature.

    Partner with larger industry blogs
There are popular blogs for reviews and news articles from all number of industries, all of which have the potential to improve your brand recognition and drive traffic to your website. Why not contact some blogs from your respective industry and discuss the possibility of a review, news update, or even a guest post?
    Attend local networking events
Business networking events allow you to meet with representatives from other industries, offer a small pitch about your products or services, and exchange business cards. This will open your website and business up to a new potential audience, as other attendees may require your services themselves, or pass the information on to others.
Make the most of your content
Although duplicate written content can deter visitors and negatively affect your search engine optimisation, you can still make the most of the time and money spent on unique content by uploading it in a number of formats. You could create podcasts or videos to accompany your articles, providing a second option for users with a particular preference or accessibility issues.
    Use free social media tools.
Over 52% of us use Facebook in India, 35% use Google+, 23% use LinkedIn with a further 30 million on Twitter. Social networking is an effective way to share your unique content and bring fresh traffic to your website, but also to encourage discussion by sharing articles or videos on your industry as a whole. You’ll be able to directly interact with potential customers and other individuals, by responding to queries, retweeting, sharing, and so on.

…And paid for social media advertising
The likes of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube all offer paid advertising, which can be of particular benefit for smaller businesses without an online presence or large following. You can set daily or lifetime budgets, to ensure you potentially reach millions of customers while still remaining under budget. Whichever social networking platform you choose, you’ll be able to specify exactly what you’re paying for - from pay per view to pay per click, to featured Tweets or featured profiles.
    Build an email mailing list
Email marketing is one of the most cost-effective but far reaching methods of communicating with customers, with no printing costs or postal errors. Correspondence is sent directly to the inboxes of your customers, complete with links back to your website or social media profiles. Offer an incentive for customers to join your mailing list, such as a promotional offer or a particularly engaging or interesting piece of content.
    Use regular calls to action
Make sure that calls to action are present throughout your website, your social media profiles and nay other marketing material. A call to action draws users to your website, encouraging them to click and proceed further down the conversion funnel. The result is not only an increased online presence, but also a better chance of a successful sale.
    Offer web-only deals or discounts
Many businesses offer unique online-only deals and promotions to increase traffic to their websites. Customers may not follow through with the deal, but increasing numbers of them are likely to visit your website and browse your products or services. You could even promote your special offers on your social networking profiles or mailing list.
Finally - Get help from the experts
Perhaps the most beneficial piece of advice we can give is to consult experts for your website marketing. Despite the initial investment, the return upon investment is usually much higher which ultimately means that it is usually cost-effective to enlist the help of SEO trained web designers or a specialist larger digital marketing agency like 3KITS who can provide you with expert-level assistance for search engine optimisation and internet marketing advertising, as well as connect you with and train you into using analytics to assess your website’s performance
If you’d like assistance with either web design, SEO, branding or any of our other services why not get in touch with us today for a free no obligation initial chat.

How to Improve Your Website's Google Ranking

Google's search engine uses a variety of methods to determine which pages are displayed first in the results. Their exact formula is a secret, but there are always a few things you can do to improve your positioning. The term for this is Search Engine Optimization(SEO).
These tips may not make your website the first one to appear in the list, but they just may help you move up a little. No matter what you do, make sure you make a site that you want to visit and written the way humans would want to read it. If you're gaming the system, sooner or later Google will figure it out and change their formula. You'll end up plummeting in the search results and wonder why.
Ignore spam and websites that offer to submit your website to hundreds of search engines. At best these are wastes of time or money and at worst they can actuallyhurt your ranking.

    Keyword Phrases

A keyword phrase is, generally speaking, the words you think someone is most likely to put into a search engine to find your content. They should appear in your content. Don't overdo it. If it looks spammy, it probably is. Again, the point here is to speak like a human and just use the words that humans are most likely to use when searching for a page about your topic. If you use obscure words, define them. Otherwise, just use natural language.
If you were searching for your own website, what keyword phrase would you type into Google for each page? Would you look for super fast widgets? Would you look for cooking with widgets? It may be helpful to get a different perspective. Ask someone else to read your page and suggest what they think your keyword phrase might be. You can also check Google Trends to see if one phrase is starting to gain popularity.
Try to stick to one subject per page, and stick to one keyword phrase per page. That doesn't mean you should write stilted text or use odd phrases. Clear writing is both easier to search and easier to read. Don't be afraid to be really long and detailed with that subject. Think Wikipedia.

    Density

One of the things Google looks for when it catalogs pages is the density of the keyword usage. In other words, how often the keyword occurs. Use natural phrasing. Don't try to trick the search engine by repeating the same word over and over or making text "invisible." It doesn't work. In fact, some of that behavior even get your website banned.
Give a strong opening paragraph that says what your page is actually about. This is just good practice, but it may help search engines find your page, too.

    Name Your Pages

Give your pages a descriptive name with the <title> attribute. This is vital. Google often displays search results as a link using the Web page's title. A link called 'untitled' isn't enticing, and nobody is going to click on it. When appropriate, use the page's keyword phrase in the title.

    Links

One of the biggest factors Google looks at is the hyperlink. Google looks at both links to and from your website.
Google looks at the words you use in links to help determine the content of your page. Use links within web pages as a way to emphasize keywords. Rather than saying, "click here to learn more about SEO" you should say: Read more about SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
Links from other websites to your website are used to determine PageRank.
You can improve your PageRank by exchanging text links with other relevant websites. Banner exchanges are not effective, and pages that want to charge you for this service are often known spammers that can hurt your rank.
Links are another area where you shouldn't overdo it. A page that is nothing but a list of links is spam.

    Social Networking

Social networking sites can be a good way to promote a site, but it is unclear how much it will affect your rank directly. Google+ promotion may have the most impact. That said, you may find that a great deal of your traffic comes from social networks, so be sure to make your content social friendly. Add images and give your content interesting titles.

    Make Your Graphics Search Friendly

Give your images <alt> attributes. Not only does it make your website more accessible to the visually impaired, it also gives you another chance to place your keywords where Google can see them. Just don't stuff keywords that don't belong.

    Good Design Is Popular Design

In the end, strong, well organized pages are pages that Google tends to rank higher. They're also pages that tend to become more popular, which means Google will rank them even higher. Keep good design in mind as you go, and much of the SEO will design itself.

Why SSL is important for SEO and your business website?

    What is SSL?

SSL expands as Secure Sockets Layer refers to the technology that establishes a secure connection between a web server and a browser and provides a complete assurance that the data exchanged between server and browser remain private and integral. It is a certification to your website that assures business owner and users about the security of their encrypted information. On August 6th, 2014 Google announced the introduction of some changes in its search engine giant’s algorithm that explicitly refer to the security of the site. The announcement includes that the website with HTTPS feature will get better ranking than the others. It is a clear signal to the online business owner that Google is being more precise and concerned about the safety and security of user’s information on browser.

    Why do we need it?

SSL the other name of this introductory certification technology refers to the security of the information in the online world. Google has provided assurance to the website owner about the safety of their website content.. Because of the hacking cases that occurred in the previous few months, online business owners are now more concerned about the safety and security of their website. To provide a protective shield against hacking attacks, a protective coverage is required for every website to protect the website content and other features. The need of SSL can only explain with the help of an example that occurred recently with a real estate company website. Recently a real estate website gets hacked, and it drastically affects the ranking of the website in eth Google Search engine. Before hacking the website ranks at top 3 positions for most of the prominent keywords. After hacking website, showed some irrelevant content on the search engine page that can hampers any of the business reputation ad status in the industry. And in the present case the site is not even ranked in the Google first page. It is a clear example that signifies the important the site security.

What will be happen after installing it.?

After installation of the SSL certificate, few points needs consideration:
Open website under HTTPS, not under HTTP. In some cases when you open website using HTTP it will some warning message. The SSL certification is compatibility with both HTTP and HTTPS. The error controlled at the server level. The solution of the problem changes with as a web server changes such as for an apache web server, Windows web server, requires setting of the SSL compatibility in different ways.
Installation of SSL certificate followed by DNS change of website domain’s A Record. It is an essential step that needs to be done right after the SSL installation. Even without making change with the DNS setting it is possible to open a website using cached DNS information. After, spending few hours with the DNS setting your site is ready to open without facing any error. If you face any problem with eth SSL certificate directly contact your website hosting service provider for solution. The SSL problem can be easily and quickly solve and you enjoy a running a secure web site with a boost up in Google ranking.
